Indirect Losses

Benefits for indirect losses compensate for the negative consequences of a worker’s disability, disease or death.

The indirect losses that must be covered under workers’ compensation are:

  • Lost wages (disability income)
    • Regular income for the injured worker to compensate for a disability preventing him or her to work at full capacity
    • Equals a given percentage of the worker’s normal income when healthy
  • Death benefits (survivor benefits)
    • Funeral and burial expenses in the case of a worker’s death
    • A weekly income for the spouse and children of a worker who has died
    • Available to the children until age 18 and to the spouse until death or remarriage
