Severity of Disability

In order to calculate the proper amount of compensation for lost wages, workers’ compensation must classify a disability’s particular severity and duration.

The severity of a disability indicates the extent to which it impairs the worker’s ability to work:

  • If the worker is able to do labor for pay but only in labor that pays less than what he or she would be doing if healthy, this worker has a partial disability.
  • If the disability renders the worker unable to do any labor for pay at all, this worker has a total disability.
