Which insurance exam do I need to study for, take, and pass?

First, you must determine which license type you need:

  • Producer – someone who sells, solicits, negotiates, or services insurance policies or plans (most common license type)
  • Consultant (Utah) – someone who provides advice to an insurance customer for a fee (there are not many consultants compared to producers)
  • Broker (Arizona) – someone who provides advice to an insurance customer for a fee (there are not many brokers compared to producers)
  • Adjuster – someone who settles insurance claims; only independent and public adjusters are required to be licensed

Second, you must determine which line(s) of business you will be selling or servicing:

  • Property & Casualty – includes products such as auto, homeowners, umbrella, commercial, businessowners, and workers compensation insurance
  • Personal Lines – includes products such as personal auto, homeowners, and personal umbrella insurance
  • Life – includes products such as life insurance and annuities
  • Accident/Health – includes products such as major medical, disability, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and long-term care insurance
