Study for Insurance Exam

Which insurance exam do I need to study for, take, and pass?

First, you must determine which license type you need:
  • Producer – someone who sells, solicits, negotiates, or services insurance policies or plans (most common license type)
  • Consultant (Utah) – someone who provides advice to an insurance customer for a fee (there are not many consultants compared to producers)
  • Broker (Arizona) – someone who provides advice to an insurance customer for a fee (there are not many brokers compared to producers)
  • Adjuster – someone who settles insurance claims; only independent and public adjusters are required to be licensed
Second, you must determine which line(s) of business you will be selling or servicing:
  • Property & Casualty – includes products such as auto, homeowners, umbrella, commercial, businessowners, and workers compensation insurance
  • Personal Lines – includes products such as personal auto, homeowners, and personal umbrella insurance
  • Life – includes products such as life insurance and annuities
  • Accident/Health – includes products such as major medical, disability, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and long-term care insurance

How long does it take to study for the exam?

We recommend studying a minimum of 20 hours per line of insurance, spread out over a week or two. For example: if you are studying for the Property & Casualty Producer exam (two lines), that means a minimum of 40 hours; if you are studying for the Life Producer exam (one line), that means a minimum of 20 hours.

How much does it cost to take the state insurance exam?

It depends on your state and which exam you are taking:
  • Utah – $32 for one line (for example, Life)
  • Utah – $44 for two lines (for example, Property and Casualty)
  • Arizona – $44 for one line (for example, Life)
  • Arizona – $56 for two lines (for example, Property and Casualty)
  • Idaho – $65 per line (for example, Life)

  • Utah – $28.25 for fingerprint submission fee (+ $6 Prometric processing fee); $75 for individual license fee
  • Arizona – $120 per license class (for the producer and adjuster license classes); regarding the fee for fingerprints, go to www.prometric.com/arizona/insurance and follow the instructions
  • Idaho – $70 for fingerprint processing fee; $80 for license application fee (regardless of the number of lines)
