Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment

The best time to buy a Medigap policy is during a person’s Medigap open enrollment period. During this period of time, an individual:

  • Is able to purchase any Medigap plan that is sold in his or her state;
  • Cannot be denied coverage—even if he or she is not healthy; and
  • Cannot be charged more if he or she is unhealthy (the insurance company cannot use medical underwriting to determine the premium).

The Medigap open enrollment period is 6 months from the first day of the month an individual turns 65 years-old, and is enrolled in Medicare Part B.

Outside the open enrollment period, it is possible (in some situations) for an insurer to use medical underwriting to deny an application for a Medigap policy or to charge additional premiums.
